What is a PCR test?
The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test specifically identifies pieces of genetic material of the new SARS severe acute respiratory syndrome -CoV coronavirus -2. It is the most widely used and reliable test.
With the PCR coronatest, a swab is taken from the nose and/or throat. The mucus that is taken contains the genetic material 'RNA', and this is stored in a microtube. This is then sent to our laboratory for analysis. In the PCR test, copies of a part of the virus are made. In our lab, the sample material of the virus is greatly multiplied, which gives the test a high test sensitivity. This means that the PCR test will pick up the virus even if someone is still carrying a few virus particles in the ascending phase and also if someone is carrying almost no virus particles in the descending phase.
To exclude whether someone is still contagious, the antigen test is therefore more accurate. However, the PCR test is considered the gold standard worldwide, which is why this test is often required when someone has to travel. The RIVM considers PCR testing the most reliable test and this is also the way of testing at most GGD locations.
Do you want to travel inside or outside the EU with a negative result of this test? Then request our PCR test with worldwide travel certificate!
How long does it take to get the result?
The results of a Covid 19 PCR test take much more time than a rapid test because of the extra logistic and laboratory steps. With our standard PCR test you will normally receive the results between 24 and 48 hours. With the PCR rapid test, this is much quicker and you will receive the results before the end of the day. Often this is even within a few hours!
What is the difference between the PCR test of Covid Limited and the GGD?
The GGD is mainly focussing on people with complaints, but we are open to anyone. Also, we often offer faster appointments. We also provide an international travel certificate with your PCR test, provided the result was negative. The GGD does not provide travel certificates or similar statements because they try to discourage travelling.
Travel certificates / Non Covid Statement
PCR Test Standard + Travel Certificate
The PCR test is a worldwide recognized test and is of course approved by the RIVM and the Dutch government. The PCR test is the gold standard for coronate testing worldwide and the travel certificate is therefore recognised and accepted almost everywhere in the world. The sample has to be analysed in a lab and therefore it takes 24 to 48 hours before the result is known.
With a standard PCR test, the travel certificate is issued within 48 hours at the latest. In most countries, the PCR test may be carried out up to 72 hours before arrival.
PCR Quick Test + Travel Certificate
Covid limited is now also offering PCR quick tests. The results will be available the same day including the travel certificate/Non Covid declaration. Also this is a worldwide recognized PCR test of which the travel certificate is recognized and accepted almost all over the world. In this case, the sample is analysed in our own lab which reduces the waiting time significantly!
Please take into account the coronavirus and the rules that apply in the relevant holiday country.
Outside the EU, the rules differ enormously from country to country, so check well in advance with your travel organisation as to which test is required. It is your own responsibility to check the current situation and related measures. On the website of the Dutch government and on the website of IATA you will find the most up-to-date travel information for your destination.
